Break Room Board #1: What is your favorite holiday song

At the office there’s this white board in the break room. It’s just there. It was probably put there to free up some space somewhere else. Anyways, a while ago we decided to erase the 2-year-old meeting notes on the board and put a question. We’ve gone through a couple already, and I thought I’d start sharing them. And hey, YouTube exists so we can listen to all the songs! Continue reading

God and grief

I heard the most outrageous thing. I heard someone say that a 3-month-old served his purpose on Earth and was taken back to Heaven.  The problem I have with that statement is that it makes God out to be kinda a dick. He lets the parents have their son, who fulfills his purpose in 3 months, then the kid is out of there. Sounds great for God and the son, but where does that leave the parents? Did they not love their son? Did they not have hopes and dreams for him when he grew up? Does God not care about the feelings of the parents, siblings, and other family members, just cause He knew better and it’s not His fault the parents loved their son? That is truly a dick move, no matter who’s doing it.

Thanksgiving

I really like Thanksgiving. It’s a wonderful holiday. I’m pretty sure it’s in the running for my favorite holiday but my egocentrism keeps my birthday as my favorite holiday. [New bucket list item: Make my birthday a national holiday].

The dynamics of my family growing up really shaped my love for the second greatest holiday: We were either going to a relative’s house to be with a lot of family, or we were having a lot of family come over. At least, that’s how I remember it. Thanksgiving has always been a ton of people for me, and I tend to feel most comfortable with larger thanksgivings than smaller ones. We’d often have other people over too: single mothers and in-laws, an occasional friend or two. Just a bunch of people having a good time, eating great food, and loving on each other.

Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate with everyone and anyone; it lacks the intimacy of Christmas morning and I feel it is better for that. Thanksgiving you’re not only thankful for your family, you’re thankful for your friends too.

So whether you’re with family, your extended family, friends, or all of the above, have a great holiday.

Making Hard Cider

Sometime last year, I watched an episode of one of my favorite show, Escape To River Cottage. In this episode (the fifth one), the guy goes and helps make some cider and it just resounded with me – I want to make some.

Fast forward a year later and my good friend Zac and I finally make the dream come true. I have to say, Zac is quite the amazing friend. He found the apples and let me borrow his juicing machine.

Here’s a video: Continue reading
